Ready for mountains!
Learn the essential skills for moving safely in the mountains with professional instruction from an IFMGA Mountain Guide. The course combines an online webinar with practical mountain skills training on the cliffs of Southern Finland.
Our Introduction to Alpine Climbing and Mountaineering Course gives you the basic knowledge and technical skills needed for alpine environments, glacier travel and moving safely on rocky mountain terrain. You will learn how to prepare for alpine and mountaineering routes, choose appropriate equipment and use essential climbing and glacier travel gear.
The course is ideal for anyone interested in mountaineering, alpine climbing, rock climbing or freeride skiing, as well as those preparing for their first guided mountain trip or alpine climbing adventure.

Mountaineering Theory – Online Webinar
The course starts at 9:00 with an approximately two-hour online webinar.
During the webinar, we cover the fundamentals of:

mountain environments and conditions
-
basic alpine hazards
-
glacier travel
-
route selection and planning
-
equipment for alpine climbing and mountaineering
-
preparing for a day in the mountains
After the webinar, there is a two-hour break for lunch and travel to Veikkola.
Practical Mountain Skills Training
The practical session starts at 13:00 in Veikkola, Southern Finland.
During the practical training, you will learn and practise essential skills used in alpine and glacier environments, including:

forming and travelling as a glacier rope team

basic glacier rope techniques
-
fundamentals of crevasse rescue
-
rope handling and safety techniques
-
different methods for protecting movement on rocky terrain
The aim is to give you a practical understanding of the techniques and equipment commonly used in mountainneering and when travelling and climbing in alpine environments.
