Backcountry skiers fundalmentals for avalance safety

Avalanche Safety 1 is a compact two-day course focusing on practical avalanche knowledge. You’ll gain essential skills and understanding for safer travel in the backcountry. During the course, you’ll learn to recognize avalanche terrain, use decision-making tools, and practice how to act in a avalanche situation.
FINLAV Avalanche Safety 1 follows the official Finnish Avalanche Education framework.

 

Course Content
•    Basics of avalanches
•    Safety thinking, human factors, and risk profile
•    Decision-making using the decision-making card
•    Understanding weather and avalanche forecasts
•    Fundamentals of route planning (map and fieldwork)
•    Using maps and mobile phones for navigation
•    Avalanche rescue equipment and companion rescue practice

 

Included in the price: course instruction and use of avalanche safety gear during the course.
Not included: accommodation, travel, or lift tickets.

Pre-course info

Schedule
Day 1
The course starts at 9:30 AM with a webinar (link sent by email before the course). After about 1.5 hours, there’s a lunch break, and then the group meets at Y1 parking area, Tunturintie 56, 95970 Äkäslompolo (exact spot confirmed during the webinar).
In the afternoon, we’ll practice with avalanche rescue gear, conduct rescue drills, and learn to recognize avalanche terrain. Depending on conditions, we’ll move around by ski touring or using lifts. Do not buy a lift ticket in advance—the instructor will inform you if one is needed.
Teaching ends around 17:00.


Day 2
Meet at Y1 at 9:30 AM. The entire day will be spent outdoors—bring a packed lunch. Detailed gear and clothing instructions will be given the day before.
We’ll focus on safe route selection and decision-making in real terrain. The course day ends by 16:00 at the latest.

•    Touring skis with touring bindings or splitboard or snowboard + snowshoes
•    Climbing skins
•    Ski boots / snowboard boots

•    Transceiver, shovel, probe (available to borrow if needed)
•    Backpack (30–40 L)

•    Water bottle or thermos
•    Outdoor clothing suitable for cold and wind
•    Warm jacket (e.g. down or Primaloft)

•    Hat and neck warmer
•    Mid-layer (e.g. fleece)

Accommodation
Accommodation is not included in the course price.
Ylläs offers a wide range of options during the course dates. The course starts and ends on the Äkäslompolo side of the fell, so it’s most convenient to stay there.
If you have a car, staying on the Ylläsjärvi side is also fine.

Conditions in Ylläs
In January and February, temperatures in Ylläs can be very cold. Bring warm clothing and windproof outer layers as your primary protection against the elements.

Insurance
Freeriding always involves risks.
The course fee does not include personal accident insurance.
The instructor holds a liability insurance policy that covers damages only if the instructor causes an accident. It does not cover injuries such as falls or collisions during the course.
Mountain Guide Finland strongly recommends having appropriate freeride insurance for the duration of the course.

Booking and Payment
After registering, you will receive an invoice, which you can also pay in instalments.
Your booking is confirmed by paying either the full course fee or a €100 deposit.
The remaining balance must be paid at least 8 weeks before the course start date.
If paying in instalments, please use the same reference number for all payments.

Cancellation Policy
•    Cancellation at least 12 weeks before the start: full refund minus a €50 handling fee.
•    Cancellation 8–12 weeks before: refund minus €100 deposit.
•    Cancellation 4–8 weeks before: 50% refund.
•    Cancellation less than 4 weeks before: full course fee charged.
